Wagner's Dream takes you deep into the artistic process, as Lepage journeys to the land of the Nordic Eddas (which, after Wagner, inspired works such as . Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings), where Iceland's otherworldly landscapes fuel his vision for the Ring. It documents the early development leading up to musical and stage rehearsals at the Metropolitan Opera House.

Richard Wagner's main work is the tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen. Wagner wrote the libretto and music between 1848 and 1874. The four operas that constitute the Ring cycle are: Das Rheingold (The Rhine Gold), Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), Siegfried and Götterdämmerung (The Twilight of the Gods). 1876 (3 cycles) - Richard Wagner. Josephine Scheffsky as Siegline in Die Walküre 1876. Bayreuth’s special and much praised acoustic is actually only fully functional in Parsifal. It is certainly also one of the reasons why Wagner uses a style that is far closer to chamber music for this work. In the earlier pieces, composed for other stages, but also in the Ring, which elaborates far denser structures than Parsifal, and especially in Die Meistersinger too, one is aware that the Bayreuth acoustic is by no means ideal since it blurs the contrapuntal element of these works.

Ideal for beginners. The mechanical set for the cicle, although has reaised a lot of controversy, to me is a good a idea and a novelty without doing strange or risky experiments locating in another place or moment of "history". It sticks to the original idea and timing, and simply uses the tecnology to try to improve the accuracy of Wagner original ideas, many of which were impossible to fully deliver in the XIX century. My only objection is that some of the costumes might seem a little naive.From the exclusively musical point of view, I think that the direction and playing is correct, and although at some parts it might lack some solemnity in spite of tempo (like the Ride of the Valkyres), at some others it really moves me. The finale of the second opera (Wehwalt! Wehwalt! Steht Mir Zum Streit) really moves me with all that gravity in Wotan's voice as well as the orchestra.Siegfried's Death is also very moving, but the destruction of Valhalla later on, again, lacks some gravity, visually and musically.As I think perfection is unatainable in a 15 hour performance. But it well deserves 5 stars!
