Land of the Sun is an album by American jazz musician Charlie Haden. In 2005, the album won Haden the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. Musically, its refinement is such that it begs critical as well as casual listening. Hopefully this won't be the last such exercise from Haden and Rubalcaba, but an introduction.

Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba recorded Solo following his collaboration with Charlie Haden on Land of the Sun, an album featuring songs written by Mexican composer José Sabre Marroquin and arranged by Rubalcaba, a sequel to Nocturne (2001), another collaboration between them. Haden and Rubalcaba were awarded the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for both albums. Solo was. the first solo album (not featuring guest musicians) released by the performer in twenty years.

Charlie and Gonzalo originally recorded this number on the 2004 album, Land of the Sun. This 2005 live version excludes the brush strokes creatively applied by Cuban drummer Ignacio Berroa in the studio session. Regardless, the musical interweaving between piano and bass establishes new dimensions to an eternally beautiful song. Another awesome Charlie Haden album. He had it right up to the end. Sure do miss him.

Haden and Rubalcaba are big names, and certainly the latter makes no bones about wanting to get across the idea and the fact of melodic, slow, peace-deepening Mexican music  . So their names are up there as a kind of lure. With their second album, DAD IS BAD, the experimental electronic duo Budokan Boys continue to build a soundtrack for a broken world.
