Arista had made it clear they would not accept any concept albums from the Kinks, and Sleepwalker, their first effort for the label, makes good on the band's promise. Comprised entirely of glossy arena rockers and power ballads, the album is more of a stylistic exercise than a collection of first-rate songs. Ray Davies contributed a handful of fairly strong songs, highlighted by the exceptional "Juke Box Music," which sees him in a shockingly resigned frame of mind, claiming that rock & roll is just rock & roll, and nothing more
Sleepwalker (The Kinks album). Redirected from Full Moon (The Kinks song)). Sleepwalker is the fifteenth studio album by the English rock group, The Kinks, released in 1977. It marked a return to straight-ahead, self-contained rock songs after several years of concept albums. Sleepwalker Tracklist. 1. Life On the Road Lyrics. Before the album’s release, The Kinks switched from RCA to Arista records. The company forbid them from releasing a concept album, forcing Ray Davies to write an album of straight-forward rock songs. Davies also opened the band’s new studio, Konk studios, which is responsible for the more modern development on the album. During the making of the album, bassist, John Dalton, who had joined the band in 1969, left the band was replaced by Andy Pyle. The album was well-received by critics, much better received than their other post-Muswell Hillbillies albums.
But Sleepwalker - the first Kinks album since Lola that’s unencumbered by either a horn section or female vocal chorus - is a clear-cut triumph both for Davies and the band. A few of these songs smack of the self-righteousness that’s hindered Davies’ recent writing; but the beautiful Stormy Sky, in which clouds become a symbol for romantic conflict, and Full Moon, a scary tune about madness and loss of self-recognition, are among his best efforts. The Kinks’ playing on Sleepwalker is easily their most powerful since Lola. Dave Davies’ aggressive guitar work is pushed into the forefront, and the intensity of his lead work seems to rouse the entire group. One is continually reminded just what a fine and forceful band the Kinks can be as those ethereal falsetto backing vocals, so long dormant, rise again like the spirit of Sunny Afternoon and Waterloo Sunset.
