The Pink Floyd story gets a thorough retelling. The English band formed in 1965 with aspiring painter Syd Barrett (singer-songwriter, guitarist) and architecture students Roger Waters (bass, vocals) Nick Mason (drums) and Richard Wright (keyboards). Their recording career started exactly 50 years with the poppy single Arnold Layne improbably, about a man who steals women’s clothes off washing lines. The show was conceived by the Hipgnosis design partnership – the late Storm Thorgerson and Pink Floyd’s creative director Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell – perhaps explaining so emphasis on the album sleeves.

Pink Floyd were an English rock band formed in London in 1965. They achieved international acclaim with their progressive and psychedelic music. Distinguished by their philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, extended compositions, and elaborate live shows, they are one of the most commercially successful and influential groups in popular music history. Pink Floyd were inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. By 2013, they had sold more than 250 million records worldwide. Barrett died in 2006, and Wright in 2008. The last Pink Floyd studio album, The Endless River (2014), was recorded without Waters and based almost entirely on unreleased material. Pink Floyd photographed circa 1967. If Led Zeppelin were the band most responsible for hard rock's vertical expansion in the '70s, hitting previously unforeseeable heights for the genre, Pink Floyd were the band that expanded it the most horizontally. Obviously, they stretched out the length - double albums, side-long jams, songs that had more movements and ideas than entire LPs by other bands. With their debut album turning 50 this week, we've decided to count down our choices for the 50 best Pink Floyd songs - from the proggiest to the poppiest to the most psychedelic, and the mini-masterpieces that were all three and more. Shine on, you lunatic vegetable men. 50. "On the Run" (The Dark Side of the Moon, 1973).

The discography of Pink Floyd, a British progressive rock band, consists of fifteen studio albums, three live albums, nine compilation albums, four box sets, five extended plays, and twenty-seven singles. Formed in 1965, Pink Floyd initially earned recognition for their psychedelic or space rock music, and, as they evolved, for their progressive rock music. They are known for philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, innovative cover art, and elaborate live shows.
