Morningrise is the second studio album by Swedish progressive metal band Opeth. It was released on June 24, 1996, in Europe by Candlelight Records and on June 24, 1997, in the United States by Century Black. The recording sessions took place at Unisound studio, in Örebro, between March and April 1996, and once more the band produced alongside Dan Swanö. Morningrise was the last Opeth album produced by Swanö. It was also the last Opeth release with drummer Anders Nordin and bassist Johan De Farfalla.

Morningrise, the sister album to Opeth's debut 'Orchid'. Not much has changed in the course of 11 months it took to record and release this CD after Orchid was put on shelves. Opeth seems to have stuck to the tradition of writing very Melodic Death and, again, Black Metal riffs much in the vain of early Dissection and At The Gates. This was the first Opeth album that I got, and at first I didn't like it too much. A few parts had some nice acoustics, a Maiden-esque melody here and there, or a cool fretless bass fill, but nothing grabbed me. I had to listen to it front to back, chilling out to really appreciate it, and despite its flaws, I still like this album.

Their earliest works, most notably Orchid and Morningrise, are albums that provide an emotional escape from the world that surrounds us. This escape is offered through different means. At times, it comes in the form of beautiful acoustic work with stunning sung vocal harmonies. The acoustic passages present on Opeth’s second album far surpass that of their first. The interludes have become deeper, rich with atmosphere and emotion. Mikael Aferfeldt has taken his voice to new levels by improving his clean singing and employing more frequently throughout his music.

Morningrise was the last Opeth album produced by Swanö. It would mark the last release with drummer Anders Nordin and bassist Johan De Farfalla. Video Player is loading. Morningrise begins to show more of Opeth's signature sound by using a mix of beautiful clean vocals, death metal vocals, and black metal vocals. There is also a nice mix between heavier guitar parts and lighter progressive and acoustic moments as well. This album features a dark and melancholic sound that gives it a terrific atmosphere. Opeth's first completely clean sung track "To Bid You Farewell" and their longest track, "Black Rose Immortal are both featured on this album. Grading Scale: 1-. : Garbage.
