Now, with all that explaining out of the way, the very high caliber of songwriting on display here makes it immediately clear that Iommi and Hughes had little difficulty in rekindling the fires of their original collaboration. Iommi's 2001 solo album) to go with the far superior sound quality. The 1996 DEP Sessions is a collaborative studio album by British musicians Tony Iommi and Glenn Hughes, released through Sanctuary and Mayan Records in 2004. Material for The 1996 DEP Sessions was originally recorded in 1996, and was circulated among fans as a bootleg recording dubbed Eighth Star, where two of the tracks were missing, but instead a track called "Shaking My Wings" was included, which did not feature Tony Iommi (its real name is To Cry You A Song, still sung by Hughes but from the Jethro. Tull tribute album A Collection Of Tull Tales)
Thus the tracks would remain for eight full years, until Iommi and Hughes finally reconvened to tidy them up with the help of keyboardists Don Airey and Geoff Nicholls, have Jimmy Copley re-record the drum tracks originally laid down by erstwhile Judas Priest man Dave Holland (since jailed for child abuse!), and give them an official release as The 1996. Now, with all that explaining out of the way, the very high caliber of songwriting on display here makes it immediately clear that Iommi and Hughes had little difficulty in rekindling the fires of their original collaboration.
Overall, The 1996 Dep Sessions is an eclectic bunch of songs that have no business being on the same album as one another, but this is rock n' roll and breaking the rules is the name of the game. It makes for an entertaining listen every now and then, but is held back by some production inadequacies. Reuniting with Glenn Hughes, the singer from his last ‘solo’ album Seventh Star, Iommi records the 1996 DEP sessions. It sounds exactly like a 90’s rock/metal album and sounds very little like a Sabbath album, yet somehow it’s really quite good, something that can’t be said about the proper Iommi debut a few years later. His guitar tone is weighty, but the album really isn’t, as the riffs aim more towards atmosphere than pure crushing density.
After eight years, The 1996 DEP Sessions finally is seeing the light of day. - - Rock Daily. The recordings on this disc were actually done back in 1996 when Iommi and former Deep Purple vocalist, bassist Glenn Hughes got together to record an album that unfortunately was never released. Finally in 2004 Sanctuary records put these recordings out and they are indeed a worthwhile release.
