Muswell Hillbillies is an album by the English rock group The Kinks. Released in November 1971, it was the band's first album for RCA Records. The album is named after the Muswell Hill area of North London, where band leader Ray Davies and guitarist Dave Davies grew up and the band formed in the early 1960s. The album introduces a number of working class figures and the stresses with which they must contend.

That's the key to Muswell Hillbillies - it mirrors the messy flow of life itself, rolling from love letters and laments to jokes and family reunions. Throughout it all, Davies' songwriting is at a peak, as are the Kinks themselves. There are a lot of subtle shifts in mood and genre on the album, and the band pulls it off effortlessly and joyously - but it's hard not to hear Dave Davies' backing vocals and have it not sound joyous. Regardless of its commercial fate, Muswell Hillbillies stands as one of the Kinks' best albums.
Muswell Hillbillies was about real people, real characters in the Davies family, Dave remembered to Express in 2014. Acoustic instruments, slide guitar, country beats and outdated equipment became the hallmarks of the Kinks’ new album
Muswell Hillbillies - 1971.
Anchored by lead itarist Ray Davies and his brother, lead guitarist/vocalist Dave Davies, The Kinks became one of the highest-regarded English rock bands thanks to immortal singles like You Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night and Lola
Muswell Hillbillies came out in 1971, and it was the Kinks' first release on RCA. This explains why you haven't been able to find the little bastard for years, but the good kids at Velvel know what's up; They've reissued this 1971 album (and are filling in the gaps for everything up until 1984). Muswell Hillbillies may very well be the best Kinks album you never heard, a scathing but witty take on urban renewal. No, it's not quite a concept album, more like an idea album- a buncha songs that are a bit downbeat in theme but lively in execution
Lyrics to "Muswell Hillbilly" song by The Kinks: Well I said goodbye to Rosie Rooke this morning I'm gonna miss her bloodshot alcoholic eyes She wore. They'll move me up to Muswell Hill tomorrow Photographs and souvenirs are all I've got They're gonna try and make me change my way of living But they'll never make me something that I'm not. Cos I'm a Muswell Hillbilly boy But my heart lies in old West Virginia Never seen New Orleans, Oklahoma, Tennessee Still I dream of the Black Hills that I ain't never seen
