The first album contains many short pieces of different character and energy levels, while the second has four long tracks, each named for the four elements of classical antiquity: earth, air, fire and water. These last are accompanied by appropriate sound effects, which may seem a bit silly and over the top to some, but I find it enhances the mood nicely. On the whole, it's hard to say which album I prefer. They are both enjoyable in different ways

The Third Ear Band was, and still is I believe, a product of late 60's experimental music, psychedelia, and some classical and Indian influence, while having a core of good old English eccentricity. Elements" - their second LP - is four Improvisations: each represents one of the four elements, and captures it's feel, mood, characteristics: whether in the sense of the ancient Greek character types, or astrology, or simply in the natural world - or all three or more - it's whatever you feel on listening. Alchemy", their 1969 debut album, already shows a band with a well-developed and deeply ingrained sound that might be far from an easy listen but still is extremely beautiful and completely melodic.
