Laura Veirs is probably not the first person who comes to mind for socially conscious music, but there’s a careful vigilance about her new album that feels intertwined with the present cultural climate of unease and suspicion. Sentries stand watch on more than one of these new songs, guarding against a vague foreboding just beyond the horizon. Set within Veirs’ pastoral lyrics and courtly folk arrangements, the effect can be unsettling, as if the watchers on the edge of some vast wilderness are themselves being watched. Yet The Lookout is by no means a gloomy album. The Lookout is Veirs’ first album since case/lang/veirs, her 2016 project with Neko Case and . lang, and her first solo release since Warp and Weft in 2013. Not surprisingly, this album has more in common with the latter than the former.

Laura Veirs knows who she is and what she does, and with The Lookout she returns after a long solo absence sounding as polished and assured as ever. Aside from her participation in the case/lang/veirs triangle that produced 2016’s case/lang/veirs album, we last heard a Laura Veirs record in 2013. It’s been awhile, but Veirs hasn’t stopped working and she hasn’t suddenly decided to wear a new hat. Rather, her music retains her familiar voice and lyrical style while including some new sonic inspirations that keep her sound fresh.

Redirected from The Lookout (album)). Laura Pauline Veirs (born October 24, 1973) is an American singer-songwriter. She is known for her folk/alternative country records and live performances. Veirs was raised in Colorado. While growing up, she heard folk-country, classical, and pop music at home.

Album · 2018 · 12 Songs. On her first solo release since her supergroup outing with . lang and Neko Case, Laura Veirs strips things down to the bare essentials, framing her evocative lyrics in as sparse a production as possible. Aside from the psychedelic guitar fest that breaks out halfway through "The Canyon," The Lookout alternates between gentle, breezy folk-rock cuts, like "Seven Falls," and spartan ballads, like the piano-based "The Meadow

Laura Veirs announces her tenth solo album, The Lookout, featuring Sufjan Stevens and Jim James on guest vocals. A prolific songwriter for nearly twenty years, Laura Veirs proves the depth of her musical skill on her tenth solo album, The Lookout, released 13th April via Bella Union. Here is a batch of inimitable, churning, exquisite folk-pop songs; a concept album about the fragility of precious things. Produced by Grammy-nominated Tucker Martine, Veirs’ longtime collaborator, The Lookout is a soundtrack for turbulent times, full of allusions to protectors: the camper stoking a watch fire, a mother tending her children, a sailor in a crows nest and a lightning rod channelling energy

The Lookout is Laura Veirs’ first album since the case/lang/veirs collaboration somewhat increased her profile. Listening to this album, you get the sense that she realizes her audience may have expanded. Where her previous albums have been a bit darker and more musically complex, The Lookout is straightforward and breezy.

Produced by Tucker Martine. I can't read these people I can't read their eyes But man alive, I'm glad That I have you. You, my lookout on the ground Making music from the broken shit you found Oh man alive, I'm glad Man alive, I'm glad

Veirs' tenth album is a quietly optimistic manifesto. For an album written in the aftermath of the 2016 US election, Laura Veirs’ ‘The Lookout’ is surprisingly non-confrontational. I’m addressing what’s happening around me with the chaos of post-election America, the racial divides in our country, and a personal reckoning with the realities of midlife, she says in the album’s accompanying press materials.

Margaret Sands, 02:57. Everybody Needs You, 02:55. Mountains of the Moon, 04:16. Sufjan Stevens), 02:36.
