12 Golden Country Greats is Ween's fifth album, and third on Elektra Records. This album marked the first time Ween limited themselves to a specific genre of music. According to producer and friend of the band Ben Vaughn, Ween asked him to produce the album as he had already been working with musicians on the Nashville country scene, having produced Arthur Alexander's Lonely Just Like Me album and co-written songs with Rodney Crowell and Gary Nicholson.

Though Ween's 1996 album 12 Golden Country Greats was their first record to feature a full-fledged band on each track, these songs were recorded with various Nashville session musicians and was viewed by the band as more of a spin-off album in the vein of The Beach Boys' Christmas Album than a true follow-up to Chocolate and Cheese. The Mollusk was the debut album for keyboardist Glenn McClelland, and with bassist Dave Dreiwitz joining shortly before the album’s release, the band finally evolved into the final five-man incarnation that continues to this da. .After recording 12 Golden Country Greats in 1995 and releasing and touring behind the album, Ween completed the remaining tracking of The Mollusk at various inland locations

12 Golden Country Greats is Ween's fifth album, and third on Elektra Records. Bringing in a wide variety of seasoned (and sometimes legendary) Nashville musicians (including Charlie McCoy, Buddy Spicher, Bobby Ogdin and The Jordanaires), the album sought to recreate the sound of golden-age country music with a great amount of success, while also combining this sound with classic Ween on such tracks as "Piss Up a Rope

Ween to Revisit ’12 Golden Country Greats’ Album at Nashville Shows. Nineties weird-rock duo will perform their tongue-in-cheek country album at two shows at the Ryman Auditorium. Joseph Hudak's Most Recent Stories. Ween will perform their 1996 album '12 Golden Country Greats' at two shows in Nashville. Before Wheeler Walker Jr. was melding raunchy lyrics with expert country instrumentation, there was Ween’s 1996 cult classic 12 Golden Country Greats. A collection of 10 songs - even the misnumbered title is a gag - the album finds the Nineties weird-rock duo parodying country clichés in tracks like I Don’t Wanna Leave You on the Farm, Japanese Cowboy and the ultimate kiss-off Piss Up a Rope.

12 Golden Country Greats. Released July 16, 1996. 12 Golden Country Greats Tracklist. 1. I'm Holding You Lyrics. Album Name 12 Golden Country Greats. Released date 16 July 1996. Labels Elektra Records.

12 Golden Country Greats (which only has 10 songs, oh those silly boys) shows Ween stretching their sound to play real country music, and shows them keeping the vulgarity and immaturity of their past releases. What cannot be overlooked but often is when referring to this band, is the real talent and skill they possess. While some people view this album as a tiny interval between albums, it is more than that. 12 Golden Country Greats is a very creative piece, and another gemstone in the Ween collection.

Talk about Ween - 12 Golden Country Greats

The Flying Nun #d edition does NOT have the M. Ali samples on it, just a very abrupt edit. Too bad...
LiTTLe_NiGGa_in_THE_СribE
I sold my copy of this ages ago, and I am trying to remember.. does the first vinyl release have the Muhammad Ali audio on it or was it printed up after they were forced to remove it? How about the other 1996 unnumbered version listed on discogs?

I currently own the numbered version and the Muhammad Ali clip is cut out unfortunately. I have no idea about the other vinyl pressings. I read somewhere that the clip is only on the first CD pressings but you'll have to fact check me on that.
Chilldweller
Unfortunately, it does not. Though, I can't speak to the unnumbered version.
