Debut was among the early independent labels where the musicians themselves were in charge. At about 1957 releases came to a halt, and in 1962 Mingus allowed a reissue series of the Debut material by the Fantasy label run by Max and Sol Weiss. Not to be confused with the independent Danish label Debut Records (3). Sítios: jazzdisco.

It was 50 years ago that the Beatles‘ released their first album, Please Please Me. In honor of that world-changing LP, we’ve compiled a list of the 100 Greatest Debut Albums of All Time. A note on how we made the list: Albums got docked points if the artist went on to far greater achievements (which is why Please, Please Me and Greetings from Asbury Park, great as they are, didn’t made the Top 10); conversely, we gave a little extra recognition to great debut albums that the artist never matched (hello, Is This. Lady Gaga Interscope, 2009. By the spring of 2009, though, Germanotta, aka Lady Gaga, was famous indeed.

Debut Records was an American jazz record company and label founded in 1952 by bassist Charles Mingus, his wife Celia, and drummer Max Roach. This short-lived label was an attempt to avoid the compromises of working for major companies. Intended to showcase work by new musicians, only about two dozen albums were issued before the company closed in 1957.

McGee formed Creation Records following the culmination of various projects including fanzine Communication Blur, his own rock outfit The Laughing Apple (with future Primal Scream guitarist and long-time friend Andrew Innes) and his running of the venue The Communication Club  . This album was released on Creation Records, which was revived for the release of the album only Discography.

The story begins though with a band that wasn't even British - the Untouchables - who sent their debut indie 7" to Extraordinary Sensations for release on the fanzine's own label, Well Suspect. The album was launched with much fanfare and a special low price. Whilst initially concieved as just a showcase for the label and a pool of future talent, "5 4 3 2 1 Go!" proved remarkably successful in its own right. Soon the label needed a follow-up so Piller was sent to Australia to check out the burgeoning mod scene there. As a guest of Shake and Shout fanzine, and living with major mod players Don and Gary Hosie, a compilation was crafted out of the vibrant antipodean underground scene.

The story told by Change the Beat is of this moment- the first collision between Bronx rap with downtown hipsters, the moment when the first art school kids and rappers mingled and checked out each others’ weird records. As with all nascent connections between white and black cultures, the moments it documents are furtive, endearing, electric, and ill-advised. Still, a shadow of melancholy hovers over the idealism of Change the Beat, and the Celluloid project by extension. The purity of the enthusiasm and curiosity coursing through the music tells its own story, and it’s a beautiful one- about the power of music to teach empathy, leap over societal barriers, and broaden experiences. But the truths pressing in outside the studio walls complicate that story: Radio remained effectively segregrated, walling hip-hop off into nightly mix shows or Urban formats, until 1993.
