After his affair with jazz fusion (Waka/Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo, both released in 1972), Frank Zappa came back in late 1973 with an album of simple rock songs, Over-Nite Sensation. But the temptation for more challenging material was not long to resurface and, after a transitional LP (Apostrophe, early 1974), he unleashed a double LP (reissued on one CD) of his most complex music, creating a bridge between his comedy rock stylings and Canterbury-style progressive rock. Three-quarters of the album was recorded live at the Roxy in Hollywood and extensively overdubbed in the studio later.

Most of the material in this double set was recorded Dec. 10, 11 & 12, 1973, at the Roxy, Hollywood. Other portions were extracted from road tapes of show Mothers Day, 1974, at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago and the recent gymnasium extravaganza at Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania, May 8, 1974. Other portions were extracted from road tapes (4-track 15-ips masters) of show Mothers Day, 1974, at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago, and the recent gymnasium extravaganza at Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania, May 8, 1974. Performer: Zappa, Mothers Album: Roxy & Elsewhere Label: Zappa Records.

Frank Zappa Roxy & Elsewhere US CD album. This mostly live set features Zappa performing with the popular Mothers of Invention line-up of the early 70's-including jazz-funk meister George Duke, Napolean Murphy Brock on saxophone, and Ruth Underwood on percussion.

When Zappa tries (which is rare) he is one fine guitarist, and the rest of the Mothers could doubtless run rings around anyone else in the jazz-rock field if they ever considered it worth their while. Basically, though, you either love Zappa and the Mothers or you loathe them, and Roxy & Elsewhere is still an album for fans only. In This Article: Frank Zappa.

Roxy & Elsewhere is a live album by Frank Zappa and The Mothers, which was released in 1974. Most of the songs were recorded at The Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, California on December 8, 9 and 10, 1973. This album is considered a high-water-mark recording of one of the most celebrated incarnations of the Mothers. It features an array of highly challenging instrumentals such as "Echidna's Arf (Of You)", "Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?", and the opening theme of "Be-Bop Tango (of the Old Jazzmen's Church)".
