Bassist Michael Formanek has roughly two decades of recording experience beyond that of bandmates guitarist Mary Halvorson and drummer Tomas Fujiwara, but once the three musicians start playing together, banish any thoughts of a generational divide. The composing is divvied up equally among the threesome on this truly collaborative outfit's eponymous 2014 Cuneiform label debut: nine tracks in total, three each by Formanek, Halvorson, or Fujiwara. The three artists forge a singular band identity on Thumbscrew, with no individual taking over the reins.

While Michael Formanek (double bass), Tomas Fujiwara (drums) and Mary Halvorson (guitar) are all known for their prodigious capabilities as improvisers, Thumbscrew is more of a composer’s vehicle. While many cooperative bands draw on material recycled from other projects, "One of the things we said at the beginning is let’s just write music for Thumbscrew and it will only be Thumbscrew music," says Formanek. It really is a three-composer trio, and all of our tunes have our basic aesthetics attached.

Code Girl was Halvorson's first attempt at writing lyrics for her original works, which are sung by Amirtha Kidambi and inspired by the songwriting of Robert Wyatt and Elliot Smith.
